What is the Bechdel test you ask? The Bechdel test was created in Alison Bechdel’s comic strip Dykes To Watch Out For. The idea is to measure the participation of women in film and see if there is gender inequality in their representation. A study analyzed 700 top-grossing films and found that only 30% of speaking characters were female. Yikes. Now let’s see how our all-time loved movies turn out when they are put up to the test.

  1. They must talk about something besides a man.
  2. These women talk to each other.
  3. Have at least two named women.

1. Lord of The Rings

Arwen, Galadriel and Eowyn. What these three characters have in common is their badassery. Another thing in common? They don’t talk to each other. Sadly, the beloved LOTR trilogy does not pass the test. NEXT!
