Daniel Craig’s journey as James Bond is coming to an end this year with the release of “Spectre”, and speculations about who will be the next MI6 agent have begun. Who should get the role? Well, if the new Ghostbusters movie got an all female cast, we should get a 007 lady.
The guessing game has begun. The casting rumors say that Idris Elba is the chosen one for the role. Other names include Jon Hamm, Sam Worthington, Tom Hardy and Richard Armitage. However, why not give the part to a woman?
Sure, there have been plenty of women in the James Bond movies, the famous (or infamous) “Bond girls”. There are 77 Bond girls in just 24 movies. The list includes Halle Berry, Rosamund Pike, Eva Green and Bérénice Marlohe to name a few. These girls are either successful women in important places or “eye candy” who help James save the day. But in the end, most of them are just remembered as his sex partners.
However, it’s no all bad news for women in the Bond world. First there’s the powerful ‘M’ (played by Judi Dench) who’s in charge of the entire MI6 (we like women in power), and there’s also the smart and trustworthy Eve Moneypenny (played by Naomie Harris), M’s assistant. These two are great at their jobs and truly do save the day.
But back to the issue. We live in a time and age where being a woman is a great thing. Every day women are tearing down barriers, demolishing stereotypes and proving that we can do the same jobs as men. We don’t expect men to see us as stronger, smarter or superior human beings, we’re simply asking for equality.
This is why I think it’s important to have a female James Bond. If almost every little boy, teenager or adult has dreamt of being Bond at some point in his life, why shouldn’t girls be allowed to do the same? And the name is not even an issue; Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively named their baby girl James.
We already have great, strong female characters in front of the cameras like Katniss Everdeen from the Hunger Games or Hermione Granger in Harry Potter, but we need more.
A great example of this is the new reboot of the Ghostbusters franchise, coming out on July 2016. It will star Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mckinnon, and Leslie Jones. These four funny women are guaranteed to bring all the comedy to the new version.
So if Ghostbusters can do it, what’s stopping others? Who do you think should be the new Bond?
