There’s a billion reasons why this woman is our QUEEN SHEVA of today. And they concern every thought all moms and moms-to-be have on their mind when thinking about their families, honestly.
Jessica Alba comes from an acting background but it’s her entrepreneurial venture that’s making her a self made woman lately.
It all started when Alba had an allergic reaction to a detergent that she used to clean her unborn baby’s onesies. That episode took her back to a time when she was a child when she suffered many respiratory diseases and attacks that would make her have a stay at the hospital for a whole 2 weeks, each time. That was something she did not want for her child. As all mothers do, she took to Google to research non-toxic and eco-friendly products. After many late nights, she found herself stuck in a corner with no way to go. Disappointingly, there were no products that fit under the umbrella of being non-toxic, beautifully designed, and accessible.
“I felt like my needs weren’t being met as a modern person,” she says. “I want beautiful design like everybody else. But it shouldn’t be premium-priced, and it should, of course, be safe.”
In search for something better, she created The Honest Company with Brian Lee, Christopher Gavigan and Sean Kane (plus some investors with major bucks). In 2012, The Honest Company e-commerce site launched with the main products of diapers and wipes. In its first year of selling products, it grossed over $10Million in revenue. Today, The Honest Company is valued at $1 billion and has expanded to be present at Whole Foods, Target, Nordstrom, Buy Buy Baby, Destination Maternity and even all those mom-and-pop shops around L.A. and Manhattan.
Her efforts in marketing, or “trying to yell from the rooftops,” as Alba puts it, has helped her in brand awareness and learn a thing or two about turning a startup into a billion dollar household products empire.
We are excited all things Honest and especially the feminine care they’ve been working on. It’s no wonder that Alba is a mother that wants the best for her family. And when she couldn’t find it, she made it herself. Way to go Mommy Alba!
