A successful and high-powered lawyer fighting to protect human rights, our Queen Sheva of the week is perhaps one of the coolest gals we’ve ever written about. No need to make a case for Amal Clooney — she’s clearly crown worthy.
Sure, Amal Clooney may make headlines because of her trendsetting style or because she’s the only woman George Clooney has ever wanted to marry, but did you know just how much of a brilliant lawyer she is?
Amal was born in Beirut, Lebanon in 1978 but fled to London during the Lebanese Civil War. She first studied at Oxford, where she earned her BA in Jurisprudence, and then continued her education at New York University’s school of law, where she was a top student. When she was living in New York, she worked as a student law clerk for one of our incredible former Queens— Sonia Sotomayor!
After graduating, Amal started her career in New York City as part of the Criminal Defense and Investigations group at a prominent international law firm. She then worked for the United Nations before returning to London to work as a barrister (which is an independent legal specialist and advisor) and has worked on several high-profile cases, including Wikileak’s Julian Assange, and jailed Egyptian journalist Mohamed Fahmy.
Amal travels around the globe making sure that those who aren’t given a voice, those who are persecuted by oppressive regimes and punished for doing no wrong are able to find justice. She recently visited the Maldives to help liberate former president Mohamed Nasheed, who was wrongly imprisoned in his country. So next time you see a Vogue article on Amal’s impeccable style or a People cover with George Clooney giving her a smooch, remember that Amal is a boss, a power woman, and now officially a Queen!
