We Are Your Friends, directed by Max Joseph – the mastermind behind the hit television series “Catfish”– is the latest film to address the warped expectations imposed upon the American youth. For all of Fox News’ banter on how the youth feel “entitled” to a college education, they fail to recognize that the United States has made it infinitely difficult for the youth to seek out any, non-collegiate path post-high school. There is a stigma around not going to college, supported by the now accepted notion that those without a debt-ridden college-degree are not going to succeed, regardless of talent, next to those with a college-degree.

This is a warped assumption, and We Are Your Friends, starring Zac Efron, follows along the heels of The Social Network to provoke a new wave of youth spirit – that of the young, middle-class entrepreneur determining their own future.

As a young, college-dropout and entrepreneur, these kinds of films not only reinforce the hard work I’m accomplishing, but they also remind me that society is not ignoring us – the ‘uneducated’. We are the dreamers. A degree does not define us, and with the inspiration of hopeful culture like We Are Your Friends, we will succeed.
